TONIGHT IS THE NIGHT: Closing reception for Bruno Smith’s solo exhibition “Floats” from 6-10pm at Ki Smith Gallery!!! . .

La Pelea (The Fight) (72 x 18 x 18”)

From “Floats” by Bruno Smith .

While most people would assume soccer is Mexico’s biggest sport, they might be surprised to learn that boxing has gained the country the most achievements on the world stage. Mexico has given birth to 204 world champions, that’s more than any country worldwide. Among Mexico’s many boxing heroes, Julio César Chávez stands out. Active from the 1980s through the early 2000s, Chávez epitomized Mexican machismo. The so-called “Mexican Style” of boxing, which emphasizes offensive aggression while paying only minimal attention to defense—did not originate with Chávez but in modern times, it is often associated with him. Chávez was, and remains, a Mexican national hero. So impactful is his legacy that when he fought Mexican Americans, fans of Mexican heritage raised questions about the Mexican ethnic authenticity of his opponents. Those questions express concern over assimilation in the United States and the point at which an immigrant can no longer be considered “Mexican.”

Following a summer of increasingly large demonstrations in Mexico City protesting the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, armed forces of Mexico opened fire on unarmed civilians, killing an undetermined number, likely in the hundreds. It occurred on October 2nd, in the Plaza de las Tres Culturas in the Tlatelolco section of Mexico City. The events are considered part of the Mexican Dirty War, when the government used its forces to suppress political opposition. The massacre occurred 10 days before the opening of the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. [14 days later] On October 16th, 1968, African-American athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos each raised a black-gloved fist during the playing of the US national anthem.

Coatlicue (87 x 42 x 22”)
clothing, pipes
From “Floats” by Bruno Smith (@itsbrunibitch) .
“Coatlicue – ‘serpent skirt’ in Nahuatl language – is the Aztec earth goddess... The most representative element is her skirt of interwoven serpents, which represents fertility. She also wears a serpent belt, which corresponds to the serpents that spring from her neck and wrist. The two fanged serpents spring from her neck represents her head. They depict the allusion of blood bursting out of the neck during human sacrifice by decapitation. Iconographically, two serpents confronting each other also indicates dualism, for Coatlicue is a symbol of the fusion: the creator and the destroyer, life and death, mobility and immobility, heaven and the underworld, beauty and horror… She wears a necklace that consists of human hands, skulls, and hearts for the earth consumes all life. Behind the necklace, her bare breasts are flabby because she feeds many.” - Art History Department, Fordham University

“Over the weekend, I stopped to buy gas at a Buc-ee’s in Bastrop, Texas, and was greeted by (in addition to a man dressed as a giant aquatic rodent) an A-frame sign advertising Buc-ee’s version of the minimum wage: cashiers, $12 to $14 an hour; food-service and car-wash help, $13 to $15 an hour; team leaders, $14 to $17 an hour; assistant, $17 an hour and up. Each job came with three weeks paid time off each year, which employees are welcome to use, roll over, or exchange for cash. If you want 40 hours a week, there’s 40 hours a week to be had; if you want more than 40 hours a week, that can happen, too.” -Kevin D. Williamson for National Review
