I’ve been a doula since 2009. Last year, I chose to do more doula training with @glowmaven of @mamaglow because of ACTIVISM and CONNECTION. 📌Symphysis Pubic Dysfunction: a group of symptoms that cause pain/discomfort in the pelvic region. Pretty ambiguous or catchall diagnosis if you ask us. In our experience, this is usually due to a pre-existing (often not observed) condition. Often times the pelvis is unstable and lacks muscular endurance as well as functional range of motion. And, the entire core cannot create task-specific intra-abdominal pressure.
Signs/ Symptoms: shooting pain in symphysis pubis, radiating pain in groin or lower abdomen, pain with walking or unilateral movement, pain getting in/out of car, tenderness in gap of symphysis pubis, waddling gait, and more. If you have any of these S/S be sure to get your healthcare provider to rule infection of any kind first.
Movements we love: sideways sled drags (like the Carioca sled drag above), side lunges to just above the point of discomfort, staggered stance good mornings, conventional stance box squat to just above discomfort, hip hinge plate slides, Functional Progression 2 with legs together and no kick through, single leg balance exercises, bird dog with pause, pelvic tilts on a physio ball, and intentional breathing practices and many more.
Birth Position: Side-lying would be ideal.
The goal with whatever care you are receiving is to enhance symmetry and balance in the body, especially the pelvis and lumbar spine, and restore the motor neural connections. If your care provider gives you a list of “No’s” and not one pelvic stability exercise then you may want to find someone else to be on your healthcare team. How’s your neck in table top? One cue we love is to “make a double chin” because it allows for elongation of our Cervical spine and lines our ears up over our shoulders. Then, our spinal cord can flow freely from the base of our skull all the way to our sacrum. Next time you’re in table top make a solid effort to take 10 breaths with the most intentional neutral spine ever before moving into cat-cow or bird dog or wiggling around. Think of the neutral spine as a place for you to chat with your body and spine. It’s a checkin.

For those of you partnered up, how do you enhance the TEAMWORK of parenting? For those of you single parents (Mad Props 🙌🏽), how do you wear multiple hats and embrace different roles?
“We have a very gender neutral environment where my husband participates in a lot of tasks that were normally given to women and vice versa. I get to do a lot of male things, which is, I don’t know, put the TV together, fix things that break. We’re kind of a very gender fluid household. I think it’s important to raise boys in that environment and girls as well. …That ‘Mom’s the boss’ thing is not going to happen in our family, because that means he’s the fun one, the good guy, while I’m the disciplinarian. I don’t want my kids to look at women like, ‘Oh, god, they’re so annoying! They always come with structure.’”
