Confessions of a Chronic Underwater-er .
When I was a young warthog (plant parent), I was lost and confused in the world of plant care. I figured the more attention (water, mostly) I gave my plants, the faster they would grow. I killed everything within a month of owning it.
So then I stopped watering.
It's a fine tactic, my cacti have been alive for a few years so something must be right. Except most of my tropical and moisture loving plants will almost always be on the brink of extreme stress. (These are my home babies, store plants are watered far more regularly🌊)
.
Photo #1) My hawarthia, aloe, and false peyote trio are a little sun burnt and a little under-watered. My cactus looks like it's had just about enough of my neglect😥 Solution-move to a slightly less intense window, and gradually shorten the time between waterings.
.
Photo #2) Underwatered calathea that attracted spider mites so I wiped to remove them and cracked the tissue thin leaves so now it has mite damage, tissue damage, and yellowing leaves from lack of water damage. Solution-water more often. .
Photo #3) My poor gardenia. Another plant that does not like to dry out, so every time I forget her, she wilts savagely and aborts all the buds and throws off all the leaves growing on the stem. And then attracts spider mites to eat the remaining leaves. Solution-Water. More. Often.
.
Photo #4) My green spider plant (this guy came from the plant swap we had in December). This guy actually has nothing wrong, other than it will go grey when its dry, so I know it need a water because it looks like it's loosing life. It rehydrates and re-greens within 24 hours. The leaf damage is from my kitty. #justcatthings
.
Anyway, the point I'm trying to make is that it's okay if you can't grow every type of plant. For best sucess, find the plants that best match your care style, then grow wildly 🌱

Swipe to see the colour change on our Aeonium since I posted it mid-Jan.
💚>💜
We’ve ‘stressed it’ by putting it back outside in the courtyard on cool bright days and overnight when no frost is forecast over the last 3-4 weeks. Pleased with the colour development so far.
It looks like some stretching for light has occurred when it was indoors over the colder months since Jan but it should start filling out again now its living back outside in the sheltered courtyard.
On another note, apparently it’s #NationalPetDay today. Never far away to miss out on being nosy or getting into shot - spot Oliver & Lily our ragdolls in one of today’s pics 🐱🐱. Yep and that will be the odd cat hair you can see on the Aeonium can’t constantly be brushing them off the plants 🤷🏻‍♀️.
Photo 1, 2, 4, 6 taken today. Photo 3, 5, 7 taken 15th Jan.
___
🏷 Aeonium Arboreum Zwartkop, Black Tree Aeonium, Black Rose or Black Beauty.
