My Media footage won’t be here for a couple weeks so I’ll share vids of what some friends and family caught!

Okay, time to explain this meet!
Not much to say about the Squat and Bench. We executed what we knew I had. I felt strong this day and had a few milestone goals in mind, but also had some stiff competitions so we went to work to build my total.
The 6/6 lifts went well. Broke records, felt amazing.
For deadlifts, opener went great. Felt strong, pulled it well.
Going into second attempt, as I pulled it, the bar stuck to the bottom of my quad due to positioning from the bottom and getting it to move past was a hitch. 🔴⚪️🔴 Third attempt! Some mistakes were made by my corner and suddenly I was tasked with pulling 606lbs off the floor! Haha! I laugh about it every time I think about it. I can’t pull 600! 🤪 but, I have it my honest college try! 
Huge thank you to @bigchunkey42 for being an incredible handler and @thetruenorthstrong for Co-handling me and being an incredible coach.

Overall I’m so damn happy with this meet. Learned SO much, grew a lot and made some absolutely future BFF’s in this sport. So much more for the future!! -

FOCUS:

We all have nerves entering into a meet. Nerves, a form of arousal, mean we are ready to perform and we are ready to leave everything on the platform. This same arousal can also distract us. According to the Yerkes-Dodson law we have an optimal performance-arousal relationship. To little arousal doesn’t result in optimal performance and neither does too much. (Read: Goldilocks).There are benefits to knowing how to consistently hit the correct arousal.

Before a lift, especially a heavy single, I follow a routine and a mantra to center myself and remove distractions. First, I breathe on a slow four count, envisioning the lift I am about the execute. This slows the nerves that have built up between attempts. I visualize myself completing the lift. Then next breath is big and deep pressing into my belt as I increase my arousal and let myself focus only on the task at hand. I try and time all this so my arousal is peaking as the bar is ready. At this point I let my body take over. I have completed these lifts a hundred times and my body knows how to complete it.

I employ this practice increasingly more often as I approach a meet. Just as we practice a squat or commands, the mental game is important too. Everyone has a different mental game, a different set-up. Drop a comment with your routines when setting up for a maximal effort lift 👇!!

My first reaction to this was as you’d imagine. “What the fuck?” This man just squatted over 4 times bodyweight smelling like a bar room hero with cold sweats, and it wasn’t slow. The time from the last drink to a PR squat couldn’t have been more than 6 hours. 
I knew this man about as well as I knew my own father by this point, and I still respect him as much. But seeing this changed my perspective.

How did he do what he did under the conditions he put himself in? I still to this day think the man might have some kind of genetic mutation. But if we disregard that theory, he did it because of his gigantic fucking heart.

Now, Brent reads these posts from time to time. If I went off on a cheesy tangent about motivation and applying one’s self to powerlifting, he’d call me and ask me what the fuck I was talking about. That’s not what I learned from him. In fact, none of what I learned from him was actually verbalized to me. It was shown.

There’s a difference in possessing heart and talking about how you need to possess heart. You can call “it” what you want, but it all relates back to mental resiliency. You can dress it up, you can try to sell it, or you can just simply act. Actions speak the loudest.

The man had something, and it was contagious. It spread to all of us. One must own their shit and own each decision one makes. If you choose to be out until the sun comes up drinking vodka the night before a meet, that’s your choice. When your hands meet the bar, not a single bit of it matters. 
It made no sense to me. Never once had I seen this man on a foam roller. Never once had I seen him second guess himself. Never once did I see him miss a single fucking squat. Ever.

My conclusion? I cared too much. I was a control freak. If I didn’t foam roll or get every single meal in, my day was ruined. Sometimes, you just gotta let the chips fall where they may and roll hard.

Am I telling you to get wasted before your next meet? No, but it worked for him. It probably won’t work for you. Am I telling you to not do rehab work? No. But I will say how you roll with the punches has more impact than how you roll on a foam roller.
