A glossy swamp snake (Liodytes rigida)
•
Did you know that this species primarily eats crayfish? They have chisel-shaped teeth that allow them to crush hard exoskeletons.
•
It was cool to come across this individual - glossy swamp snakes can be very hard to find.

More eggs from my 4000 gram normal 7 on the bottom and more sitting up top. I'm thinking about 10 in total. She was paired to quite a few super males so it's a toss up for the father's
I'm hoping the super blackhead and the BPOG Mojave G-Stripe. Worst case is I'll get some double hets.

I've had better tent-mates. I've had worse - but I've definitely had better. Pterinochilus murinus (I think). Baboon spider. Fascinating and beautiful animals, but I still prefer snakes.

I saw a lot of turtles warming up in the sun earlier in the week. The Painted Turtle here was resting on what I realized after a couple of seconds was a much larger Snapping Turtle. I can’t guess how large the Snapper was but the shell of this slider was about 6-7” in length. That makes me think this Snapping Turtle was at the top end of the scale and probably very old. #snappingturtle #paintedturtle #herpetologist #herpetology #turtles #lpconservancy #peggynotebaertnaturemuseum #northpondnaturesanctuary #outdoors #naturephotography #chicagoparkdistrict #outdoorphotography #wildlife #wildlifephotography #natgeo #urbannature #nature_up_close #nikond3400 #nikonphotography #reptilesofinstagram #animazing_wildlife

The most highly requested species spotlight is here! My all time favorite animal here in Washington, the Northern Pacific Rattlesnake (Crotalus oreganus). I could ramble all day about these beauties, but I tried to keep it brief 😉

These beautiful creatures are highly villianized and misunderstood. NorPacs as they are called by some, can be identified by their large triangle heads, verticle pupils, facial pits, light banding around the tail, and of course the classic rattle.
Did you know? Rattlesnakes actually give birth to live young! The babies are born with a "button" at the base of their tail. Young are usually birthed late summer/fall.
Although they are not a listed species, habitat loss and deaths due to humans via roundups or road mortalities frequent. We still monitor populations of these snakes, just as we do all of our other wildlife to ensure their populations remain stable and we don't lose them from the landscape. 🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍 #snake #wildwashington #snakeconservation #rattlesnake #crotalus #herpetology #conservation #snakesarefriends #pnw #pacificnorthwest #pnwwildlife #wildlife #nature #herpsofwashington #washington #HERpetologist #femalebiologist #femalescientist #scicomm #sciencecommunication #outreach #educate #conserve #protect

The cheeky and charming common lizard Zootoca vivipera. The last shot of the juvenile tumbling backwards off the twig is a favourite. If you’re lucky enough to see any reptile take the time to watch them go about their lives. Often amusing, always interesting and generally enchanting.

Frogs are crucial to their ecosystems, so why are we stealing them from the wild to waste on classroom dissection? There's plenty of other comprehensive, humane ways to learn comparative anatomy. A little ring-necked snake found crossing a path while we were out surveying snakes for SFD. These cool little snakes are semi-fossorial and spend most of their time under rocks or debris. They are small snakes only reaching about 40cm (~15in) and their prey primarily consists of earthworms, insects, and salamanders. They inhabit hill prairies, bluffs, and open forest.

“Welcome to Jurassic Park” 🦕🦖 Wow! I am so amazed that we live in this world of living dinosaurs! Definitely the highlight of my walk today. We have the Eastern or Central painted turtle (Chrysemys picta or Chrysemys marginata) next to the Common Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina). This was the first time I’ve seen the two species interact and seeing the size difference was incredible.

What a toad-ally awesome day!
Western toads (Anaxyrus boreas) are normally a stillwater breeding species, preferring to lay their eggs in wetlands much like Red-legged frogs and Pacific Tree frogs. However, in the Chehalis River Basin, western toads actually breed in stream- laying their eggs either in the shallow edges of the river or in pools on gravel bars along the river.
With their populations declining, our work with western toads aims to monitor their populations in the Chehalis River Basin as increased agricultural, proposed dams, channelization of the river, and climate change become more prominent.
Western toads spend a majority of their life in the uplands, meaning riparian habitat is crucial to their survival. Their diet is made up mostly of ants that can be found in these areas. As we survey through parts of the river where the riparian disappears, we notice a dramatic decline in toad occurrences.
Floating down the river looking for cute little toads....who could ask for a better job? -

I don’t know what type of toad this is every ID I’ve gotten says gulf coast toad but that doesn’t make any sense the texture of the toad’s skin is different than the gulf coast toad and so is the color and gulf coast toads this size don’t even look like this and are a lot darker in color

Isn't this the smallest toad you've ever seen? 🐸🐸
.
This adorable Central American Gulf Coast Toad (Incilius valliceps) was found while surveying deep in the jungle here @treesocietybelize. Some of you that know this species obviously recognize that it is a recently metamorphosed individual and not an adult. .
Regardless! It is fascinating to me how this tiny tiny creature packs almost identical organs as a massive blue whale into such a tiny body.🐸👉🐳
.
Of course there are some major differences in structure, function, and form but the point I am trying to across is that there is an incredibly amount of diversity on this planet and it's astounding how many characters they share!
.
What aspects of the diversity of this planet blow your mind???

A glossy swamp snake (Liodytes rigida)
•
Did you know that this species primarily eats crayfish? They have chisel-shaped teeth that allow them to crush hard exoskeletons.
•
It was cool to come across this individual - glossy swamp snakes can be very hard to find.

I'm very happy to announce that I am a certified wildland firefighter!
•
I attended a course in late November, which allowed me learn the many factors that go into fire fighting as well as prescribed burning. I also participated on a controlled fire as part of my training - it was really fun and a great learning experience.
•
I had to complete a physical endurance test before I could become completely certified. I was required to wear a 45 pound vest and walk (no running allowed) 3 miles in 45 minutes. I made it in 42 minutes and 21 seconds, this was after ALL of the weights had fallen out of my hiking backpack and I had to put on another vest, while being timed!
•
Prescribed fire is essential in the ecosystem where I work. Long leaf pine habitat depends on fire to keep an open canopy allowing low growing vegetation to thrive - gopher tortoises, flatwoods salamanders, red - cockaded woodpeckers, and many other species depend on this type of habitat. This kind of management helps prevent disasters from happening too. More vegetative congestion means that there is more fuel to burn when an uncontrolled natural fire occurs.
•
I can't wait to gain more knowledge and experience as I participate in controlled burns and wildland fires.
•
The photos included are of me participating in a controlled burn during my training - in the second photo I am using a drip torch to set fire to dry plant matter.

A gorgeous scarlet kingsnake (Lampropeltis elapsoides) I found a few weeks ago. I was expecting to discover it out in the field hiding under bark or taking refuge under a log, I was not expecting to find it under a piece of tin right by our office building!
•
This was a lifer (my first specimen) for me and probably one of my favorite finds, I had been looking for one for over a year and a half, so this made my entire week. What is your favorite lifer experience? Tell me in the comment section below!
•
Swipe to see the video of its release, you can see where it was living.

Stay tuned for more photos and info on this cutie.

Here is an eastern fence lizard (Sceloporus undulatus) found last week.
•
This lizard is very much a male, you can differentiate the sexes pretty easily as females don't have the gorgeous blue patches that line the undersides and chin.
•
During breeding season, males will expose these bright, colorful patches to females in hopes of attracting a suitable mate. They'll even flash these patches at other males while head-bobbing and doing tiny lizard push-ups to defend their territory.

This gorgeous fence lizard was found on a fence during routine maintenance. After admiring his gorgeous colors, I released him so he could get back to attracting some ladies.

A Florida redbellied snake I found last fall.
•
They are dietary specialists as they mostly feed on gastropods (slugs and snails). Redbellies even have specialized teeth that help them latch on to slick prey items.

This beauty was released after photos were taken - look at that belly!
